Breast cancer vaccine being tested
A breast cancer vaccine is being developed and tested by scientists in the USA.
Researchers at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hope to start clinical trials for the new vaccine this spring.
The treatment aims to trick the body into something it wouldn't normally do, producing antibodies that fight breast cancer cells.
The trials will be done in two phases: The first, involving women with active cancer, will last four to six months, and the second, which is expected to take about a year, will include women who are in remission and have a high risk of reoccurrence.
If successful, the vaccine would not replace traditional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, but would be an additional course of action to prevent the reoccurrence of the disease.
