World's healthiest wine goes on sale
By Carla Bevan on Wednesday 17 December 2008
The world's 'healthiest wine' has gone on sale, claiming to help unblock arteries and even reduce the risk of heart attacks.
The man behind the tipple, Australian doctor Philip Norrie (aka The Wine Doctor), says he's simply boosted the amount of resveratrol, the naturally occurring anti-oxidant found in grapes, to help create his 'vascular pipe-cleaner' wines.
Available in both red and white varieties, including chardonnay and shiraz, Norrie is hoping the drinks will become must-try wines around the world.
'While the positive effects of moderate wine consumption have long been documented, the inclusion of such large quantities of this beneficial anti-oxidant is very good news for wine drinkers,' he told the Australian Associated Press.
'What we've been able to do is boost the amount of resveratrol in wine and you won't even know it's there... you're effectively clearing your arteries while you drink.'
However, he does urge individuals to still drink in moderation and not use the wine as a kind of tonic.
'Getting people to stop smoking, exercise and lose weight, is a nice idea but in reality it doesn't happen,' he added.
'Drinking two glasses of wine is realistic, enjoyable and also good for you and I've made it even healthier.'
