Will calorie labels on alcohol stop us drinking?
By Carla Bevan on Wednesday 26 November 2008
Printing the number of units a bottle of wine or beer contains on the side of the bottle doesn't appear to have stopped binge drinking in the UK, but could calorie labels?
That's what health officials are hoping as they start targeting women's egos rather than their heads.
The Government's Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs believes making direct comparisons between certain drinks and fatty foods (a pint of lager equals a sausage roll, for instance) might stop image-conscious women drinking as much as they currently do.
Instantly condemned by the drinks industry – who claim it will just result in people skipping meals before a big night out – proposals in the paper also included higher taxes on stronger drinks, health warnings on bottles, 'damp houses' for people who've drunk too much to sleep it off in safety and a zero-alcohol limit for drivers under the age of 21.
