Women becoming bigger drinkers
As we get older, we’re not necessarily becoming wiser, as a new report reveals older women are drinking more than ever.
A study by Cardiff University has discovered that women in their 30s and 40s are becoming the most irresponsible drinkers.
At the same time, men are starting to sober up in their 30s after spending a decade abusing their liver.
The study discovered that women are drinking bigger glasses of wine, unaware of alcohol units and limits, and taking risks with their health.
Researchers breathalysed 1,200 drinkers late at night since 2004, and found that whereas men hit a 'drinking peak' at the age of 29, women tended to drink more as they approach middle age.
Dr Simon Moore, who led the research into British drinking habits, said, 'We found older women were more intoxicated, and the further they got into their thirties and forties, the higher the alcohol content in their blood.
'Men in their twenties often drank very heavily, but after 29 they tend to have more responsibilities and often quieten down and consume less.'
Dr Moore found half of the women breathalysed had exceeded the daily recommended limit of three units of alcohol, around two large glasses of wine.
This is worrying news as drinking just one unit of alcohol per day can increase your risk of breast cancer by about six per cent. This risk increases by a further six per cent for each extra unit of alcohol you drink.
So try to stick to the recommended limit to save your health – and your dignity.
