More men dieting than women

Marie Claire News: Atkins Diet

British men have overtaken women as the nation's dieters, as a new report reveals more men are now watching their weight than women.

In the last six months, 76 per cent of women admitted they had been on a diet. But 81 per cent of men said they had also tried to cut down the amount they eat.

However, the reasons men and women diet are very different. While 71 per cent of women were on a diet to improve their appearance, only 48 per cent of men agreed.

'Better health' was given as the main reason men choose to go on a diet; 52 per cent agreed, compared with just 29 per cent of women.

Regional differences were also uncovered in the survey of over 1,500 people by sports nutrition site www.myprotein.co.uk.

Men in London are more likely to be on a diet than anywhere else in the country, while those in the mid-West of Wales were the least likely to be watching their waistlines.

The capital's calorie counters were also most likely to diet for their appearance, with 57 per cent of men saying they were more worried about their looks than their health.
