British couples 'choosing baby gender' abroad

Foetus

British couples are traveling to clinics abroad to choose the sex of their baby, according to new reports.

Some clinics in Europe are offering the gender selection process illegally and representatives from one Turkish fertility clinic were secretly filmed visiting prospective parents in London who wanted the procedure.

The clinics guarantee that if pregnancy occurs, it will be of the couple's chosen sex.

Gender selection is illegal in both the UK and Turkey and the clinic, the Jinemed Center, which denies any unlawful activity, is now under investigation. Patients have been warned not to travel there for treatment.

BBC reporter Colette McBeth explained that gender selection is possible using IVF and a type of embryo screening called Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), however this screening process is only employed for medical reasons.

Ms McBeth commented: 'Some countries do allow sex selection like the US and Russia. However many patients who were planning to go abroad were completely confused as to where it was legal and where it wasn't.'
