Women are more interested in celebrities than their own health, a worrying new survey has discovered.

In a poll of 1,000 women, more women could identify Coleen McLoughlin than regularly checks their breasts.

'While women are clued up about the latest gossip from celeb-land, it appears they are dismissing serious information that could save lives,' Arlene Wilkie from Breast Cancer Campaign, who commissioned the survey, told the BBC.

'More than 45,500 women in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer every year and we know that early diagnosis gives the best possible chance of survival.'

The survey also discovered that 40% of women over the age of 65 did not consider themselves at 'risk from breast cancer', despite being in the age group most at risk.

The sum total of women who checked their breasts at least once a month, from all age groups, was just 55%.
