Duffy can boost your workout

Woman exercising

Ever find yourself flagging during a jog? Or get bored during Body Conditioning? The answer could be switching songs on your iPod.

A new study has found that listening to certain songs can boost your ability to exercise and scientists have now put together the 'perfect' workout playlist.

Dr Costas Karageorghis, an expert in music and exercise, monitored 30 volunteers while they exercised to a range of different songs.

He found that their endurance rose by 15% while listening to specific rock and pop tracks.

Dr Karageorghis says that the best songs for moderate to intense exercise have around 120 to 140 beats per minute. He listed ‘Mercy’ by Duffy, ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ by Queen, or ‘Dancing Queen’ by Abba as good tracks to get you moving.

In addition to the music boosting endurance levels, moderate exercisers said listening to music also reduced their perception of how hard they were working, so they could work even harder.

Dr Karageorghis’s research will be tested this weekend as he has chosen all the songs for the first ‘musical half-marathon’ being held in London. Speakers will play songs at certain points along the route to motivate marathon runners.
