Only 12% get their five a day
Do you eat the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables every day? If you do, you're in the minority.
According to the latest research, only 12% of us are eating enough fruit and veg, and we're also not eating enough fibre.
In fact, the average Brit only eats 2.5 portions of fruit and vegetables each day, while an astonishing 12% eat none at all.
'While the need for five a day seems to be common knowledge, the number of us who actually achieve this is shockingly low,' says Giles Quick of TNS Worldpanel UK, which carried out the research.
More than 25,000 households took part in the study, Health of Britain, Perspective on Nutrition 2008, which also discovered men and women in the UK today increasingly wear larger clothing sizes. Separate research discovered that a third of us don't get enough fibre in our diets.
However, there is some good news: on the whole, people today snack less and eat less salt than they did three years ago.
We may have put down the crisp packet, therefore, but we're failing to replace it with apples or oranges.
