Two in five women choose Caesarean

Two in five pregnant women choose to give birth by Caesarean section in some areas of the country, according to a new report.

The national average of those opting for a Caesarean section is 24%, however one NHS trust had a 39% Caesarean rate.

The report by the Healthcare Commission also revealed a disturbing picture of maternity services in the UK. Some healthcare trusts said they had as few as two beds available per 1,000 births, meaning that each bed was used, on average, by more than one woman in 24 hours.

Despite reports from the survey that only 16% of units had one bathroom per delivery room and fewer than half of women said the toilets were 'very clean', 89% of women said they had been happy with their experience during pregnancy and birth.

Healthcare Commission chairman Sir Ian Kennedy commented on the report saying: 'There is clearly more to be done to improve the quality of clinical care as well as the experiences of women.'
