Feisty women give birth to sons

By Carla Bevan  on Tuesday 17 June 2008

Pregnant woman

Feisty women are more likely to give birth to baby boys than baby girls, a new study claims.

Women with high levels of testosterone in the womb, usually more prevalent in 'aggressive' women, provide a better environment for sperm cells with the Y chromosome, which produce boy babies.

But it isn't just women with added attitude who show higher than average levels of testosterone, those suffering from high levels of stress also produce extra testosterone.

Therefore, a woman who had recently experienced a traumatic event might also be expected to produce a boy rather than a girl.

So far scientists have only proven their theory with cows, but do believe it is likely the same outcome would be seen in human beings.
