Shopping officially beats the blues
By Lucy Hutchings on Thursday 29 May 2008
Need cheering up? Shopping has been proven to be a fail safe way to beat the blues, a new study has revealed.
Researchers from the University of Rotterdam discovered that indulging in comfort foods or going on a shopping spree were sure fire ways to help forget your problems.
Participants in the study were asked to write an essay on either death or visiting the dentist. Those with low self-esteem were found to eat more biscuits while working on the piece, which researchers attributed to being a form of comfort to escape negative thoughts.
A similar effect was found when participants were asked to create a shopping list, with those with low self-esteem generally buying more.
Study leader Dirk Smeesters commented, 'when you indulge in shopping or eating, it helps you forget yourself'

I think the above applies to almost everyone. We are living in a stressful society with lots of choices and options in everything, having to look good for others and under pressure with work etc, and relationship and financial problems. Lots of people would forget about themselves doing either of those things, or something else that takes them away from those thoughts. No good if it effects them long-term though.
