Veggie sausages worse than bag of crisps

Marie claire Health news: Sausages

Some brands of veggie sausages and burgers contain the same amount of salt as five bags of crisps, according to new research.

Just two sausages from one particular company provided the entire day's salt recommendation for one adult.

The saltiest product was a Fry's Vegetarian Traditional Sausage at 2.8g - four times more than the pork counterpart. Two of these sausages provide 5.6g of salt, close to the 6g recommended daily amount for an adult.

The amount of salt found in various vegetarian products differed significantly. For example, a Linda McCartney Vegetarian Sausage contained 38% more than its Quorn equivalent. Whilst two Cauldron vegetarian sausages contain 2g of salt, over 40% more than the 1.2g found in two Asda Meat Free Lincolnshire Sausages.

The saltiest burgers were Fry's Vegetarian Traditional Burgers which contained 1.8g of salt - six times higher than the Asda meat burger.

The research by Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH), coincides with National Vegetarian Week, which begins today.
CASH nutritionist Carrie Bolt said: 'We would urge people to look carefully at the labelling to help make sure that they are buying lower-salt products wherever they can.

'Confusingly, many of these products give only the sodium levels on pack. These need to be multiplied by 2.5 to get the salt levels.'

CASH is short-sighted once again. Eating more vegetables and fruits greatly reduces everybody's sensitivity to salt and as a result there is no extended blood pressure reaction to salty veggi-burgers. CASH is becoming one of the most dangerous organizations in the UK because it is singularly focused on blood pressure and refuses to recognize the hidden dangers of low salt consumption, such as type 2 diabetes, premature artery stiffness and cardiovascular deaths because of increased aldosterone production. It has convinced the FSA to carry out the largest medical experiment in history - with you chaps as the proverbial guinea pigs.

At least it is down on the record, so that 10 years from now, the bureacrats cannot say they were unaware of the facts.
