Staff 'hungover at desk'

Marie Claire news: Career woman Rex Features

We've all been there plenty of times ourselves, but now the figures prove it with one in three employees admitting they have been hungover at work and one in ten revealing they have been drunk at their desk.

A survey conducted by Norwich Union Healthcare of 1,000 people revealed staff confessed they made mistakes, found it difficult to concentrate and had to leave work early to sleep off their hangovers.

80% of employers said they believed alcohol is the largest threat to the well-being of their staff.

Of those quizzed, 85% admitted being hungover had affected their performance at work, 35% couldn't concentrate, 35% were less productive and 42% felt tired to the point of nodding off.

It seems media and creative jobs are the worst occupations regarding drinking, with 41% of people in this field saying they had been to work while still drunk - four times the average.

Cary Cooper, Professor of Organisational Psychology and Health at Lancaster University, said: 'It's no surprise there is a lot of drinking in the media; it's part of the culture to unwind with a drink.

'It's the jobs where there is most stress - long hours, high expectations, short-term contracts and bad management - where you get the most excessive drinking.'
