Alcohol 'increases breast cancer risk'

Wine

Women who drink more than a glass of wine a day could drastically increase the risk of developing breast cancer, a new study claims.

As one of the largest studies of its kind, the findings will increase health fears about drinking even small amounts of alcohol.

The study of nearly 185,000 women over seven years proved that drinking one large glass of wine daily increases the risk by almost a third.

Women who drink two glasses of wine a day are 51% more likely to develop breast cancer than those who never drink.

Currently breast cancer kills 12,000 women in Britain every year.

Jasmine Lew, lead researcher at the National Cancer Institute in America commented: 'Our study shows that not only does a small amount of alcohol significantly increase the risk of breast cancer, it increases the risk of the most common type of breast cancer, responsible for round 70 per cent of cases.'

A science information officer at Cancer Research UK said: 'There is a large body of research which shows that alcohol can cause breast cancer, probably by increasing levels of the hormone oestrogen.'
