Eight hours sleep to stay slim
Getting eight hours sleep a night is the key to staying slim, scientists have claimed.
New research has showed that people who slept for less than six hours a night, or more than nine, put on more weight than those who managed seven or eight hours every night.
Scientists found that people who didn't sleep for long enough gained nearly 4.4lbs (2kg) compared to those who slept for the suggested number of hours.
Those who slept for too long found their weight increase by 3.4lb (1.58kg) more than those who had the recommended number of hours over a six year period.
People who were asleep for less time were 27% more likely to become obese.
Scientists explained the results saying the amount of sleep a person has affects their hormone levels - especially hormones which control appetite and feeling full after a meal.
Lead researcher, Jean-Philippe Chaput said: 'Our study provides evidence that both short and long sleeping times predict an increased risk of future body weight and fat gain in adults.'
He added: 'Since preventing obesity is important, a pragmatic approach adding sleep hygiene advice to encouragement towards a healthy diet and physical activity may help manage the obesity epidemic.'
Both UK and American sleep experts explained that one way of getting a good night's sleep is by going to bed and getting up at the same time every day even at weekends. Having a relaxing routine prior to your bedtime, like taking a bath or reading, is also beneficial.

I am a chornic insomniac - I go to bed at 10pm and get to sleep OK but wake around 2pm if not before and cannot get back to sleep. I was in Slimming World for some time and was doing well but about 5 years ago started putting on weight for no reason; I still followed the diet but it didn't help. MY GP has tried anti-depressants, muscle relaxants and sleeping pills, the latest one of which they give to prisoners to make them sleep at night, to no avail. I saw an article about this a few years ago by Dr Raj Persaud confirming your article above but my husband poo-poo'ed the idea. If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know, as my weight is increasing and I am now nearly 13st!!

In response to Sheila Innes:
Try Aromatherapy for the sleeping I have found that has really helped me, pills didnt work for me either. As for eating I found weight watchers much more successful than slimming world. Also I have found sex is a good way of getting to sleep especially if it is a good long session which you do most of the work for (this will make u tired trust me) especially if you orgasm, a good orgasm helps you relax and so are more susceptible to sleeping.(I am a sex therapist sorry if my response seems that way inclined).
