Aspirin helps asthma

Women could ward off asthma by taking a low dose of aspirin every day.

Researchers discovered that older women who take aspirin regularly are less likely to develop asthma than those who don't.

More than 40,000 women took part in the study. Of those who were given aspirin to take daily, 872 new cases of asthma were diagnosed, compared to 963 in the group taking a placebo.

Aspirin has been getting plenty of good press recently with the chances of developing everything from breast cancer to bowel cancer minimised for those who take it.

However, the drug does have side effects, including stomach ache and bleeding, and is not suitable for those with high blood pressure or liver disease.
