Marie Claire health news: Third of teenage girls on  diet

A THIRD OF teenage girls is currently on a diet or has tried to lose weight recently, a new survey has found.

A poll of more thank 500 teenagers by BMRB Omnibus revealed that half the number surveyed tried to eat fewer than 1,200 calories a day – 40% less than they should do, risking bone development.

Teenage boys are also at risk of eating disorders with one in seven admitting to attempting to lose weight. One in four of those surveyed said he eats fewer than 800 calories – compared with the 2,500 calories needed daily.

Aside from the diet problems highlighted, the survey has revealed that 85% of the youngest polled do have five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

Charlotte Parker, a nutritionist for Sainsbury's said: 'When this knowledge is combined with the issue of childhood obesity, it is clear that we need to help teenagers and their families more to achieve a healthy lifestyle.'
