The Italian label will launch a special exhibition of costumes used in the upcoming 1920s-set film

Prada will host a special exhibition of the costumes used in The Great Gatsby film, it was announced today.

Italian designer Miuccia Prada worked closely with costume designer Catherine Martin to create more than 40 bespoke looks for the Baz Luhrmann-directed film – each inspired by catwalk styles from the Prada and Miu Miu archives.

A selection of these costumes will now go on display from tomorrow until 12th May at the Prada New York Epicenter, before travelling to exhibit halls in Tokyo (14th June to 30th June) and Shanghai (from mid-July).

The exhibition, titled Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby, will feature a range of items from the film's Jazz Age wardrobe including flapper girl dresses, feathered hats, retro shoes and sparkling jewellery, as well as design sketches, production stills, backstage footage and movie trailers.

It will also include mannequins displaying key looks of each of the film's characters, played by the likes of Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, and for the New York show, a two hundred foot mural depicting a montage drawn from the big screen adaptation's dazzling party scenes.

Speaking to WWD today, Prada said of F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous novel of the same name: 'When I read it, it was psychological. It was not about glamour for me. It was a real [study of] personality, very internalised.'

And talking about the film's costumes and, in particular, the party dress Mulligan wears as Daisy Buchanan, she added: 'It was meant to be about light. It became about money, because [Luhrmann] wanted to show her as the most beautiful and rich woman on earth.'

The opening of the exhibition will coincide with the star-studded film's world premiere in New York tomorrow night. The Great Gatsby will then open this year's Cannes Film Festival on 15th May before hitting UK cinema screens the following day.
