M&S releases celebrity-free Christmas TV advert

By Fiona Raisbeck - Wednesday 7 November 2012

You know Christmas is just around the corner when M&S releases its festive TV advert. But in a surprise move, this year's version doesn't feature any celebrities – the first time the ad has done so in over a decade.

While last year's commercial starred the likes of Take That's Gary Barlow, Dannii Minogue, Myleene Klass and Twiggy, the new offering features a host of unknown models – of all sizes and ages – and lots of kids.

The ad opens with a typically festive scene with a clutch of models throwing snow balls towards the camera as they wear the latest winter collections. Other segments in the ad include models wearing the party season line set to an on-trend Art Deco backdrop and loungewear (perfect for lazing around in over the Christmas break), as well as a finale clip of a group of cute kids dancing to Kool and the Gang's Celebration.

The commercial, which also features songs such as INXS' I Need You Tonight and Lady Marmalade by Labelle, was directed by London-born music video extraordinaire Jake Nava, most famous for directing Beyonce's award-winning Single Ladies promo.

Steve Sharp, executive director of marketing at M&S, said: 'Customers have been the driving force behind this campaign and we’ve been in constant dialogue to give them more of what they want to see from M&S: more products, more diversity and an injection of style and fun.'
