Iconic Hollywood costumes hit London

By Chloe Mac Donnell - Friday 20 January 2012

London's V&A museum offered Marie Claire a sneak preview of their major autumn exhibition of iconic Hollywood costumes.

Gathering together over one hundred of the most celebrated costumes from more than a century of films, the exhibition includes classics include Dorothy’s (Judy Garland's) blue and white gingham dress from The Wizard of Oz, Cecilia’s (Keria Knightley's) emerald silk evening gown from Atonement and Rose’s (Kate Winslet's) pristine boarding outfit from Titanic.

Speaking at the launch, Hollywood costume designer and guest curator of the exhibition, Deborah Nadoolman Landis explained: ‘This landmark exhibition will provide a once in a life-time opportunity to explore the most beloved characters in Hollywood history and gain an insight on the role of the costume designer and their vital contribution to cinema storytelling.’

Divided into three acts the exhibition explores the journey of costume design from the early Charlie Chaplin silent movies right through to upcoming autumn releases such as The Dark Knight Rises.

Deborah's fellow guest curator Christopher Frayling revealed that his favourite is Marilyn Monroe’s sequin gown from the finale of 'Some Like It Hot' - ‘purely for it’s feat of engineering’!

The exhibition sponsored by Harry Winston runs from the 20th October 2012 to the 27th January 2013.
