Marc Jacobs offers reward for stolen S/S12 collection

Marc Jacobs has offered a reward to whoever can help him find his label's missing spring/summer pieces, which were stolen in London last week.

It has been described as the fashion crime of the season, and now designer Marc Jacobs has tweeted he will offer a reward to whoever can help him recover his stolen S/S12 collection.

The pieces were stolen from a courier van as they were being transferred from Paris to London for a press day on Friday.

The company released a statement to apologise for the cancellation of the press event - and the theft is now being investigated by the police.

To help speed up the investigation the company's Twitter account, posted, 'See any chic truck drivers cruising around Europe dressed in #SS12 Collection? Get a pic & call 212-343-0222. Reward.'

It was at first thought to be the label's entire line had been taken but now it has been revealed the stolen clothes were selected duplicates from the designer's forthcoming range, with the originals safe in New York.

Marc Jacobs associates went on to tweet, 'We appreciate all the concern about our stolen #SS12 Collection samples! We do still have other samples thankfully. Life goes on.'

An employee, who did not want to be named, told the New York Times, 'The collection as shown in New York is safe, and the red carpets won’t be missing Marc Jacobs this season.'

It was first believed the thieves had mounted a daring raid on the courier van between France and Britain, but in fact the collection was stolen at 8am in sunshine on Mount Street, Mayfair, outside the large Marc Jacobs store.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed they were investigating the theft of 'a quantity of clothing, bags and shoes' valued at almost $65,000.

It is not obvious what the thieves plan to do with the 46-look collection, although it's thought they may plan to design counterfeits of some of the items, which are valued at as much as $5000 per item.

This robbery is not the first amongst the fashion world - two years ago seventy-five dresses from Victoria Beckham’s spring/summer 2010 collection were taken from a delivery van in New York. In 2007, Christopher Kane’s studio was broken into and 23 pieces from that year’s spring/summer collection were stolen.

If you're wanting to help Marc Jacobs, keen-eyed fashion detectives should be on the lookout for thieves dressed in see-through cellophane, 1920's frapper dresses and lots of mint and gingham prints.
