Emma Watson models new People Tree collection

By Lucy Hutchings  on Wednesday 25 August 2010

Emma Watson for People Tree

Emma Watson is carving out quite the career as a fashionista – not just modelling People Tree's new youth collection, but travelling to Bangladesh to see the collection being made, too.

The Harry Potter leading lady visited the slum homes of garment workers, to follow the collection during the production process.

She commented: 'Following my summer collection for People Tree I wanted to visit Bangladesh to see the difference Fair Trade makes. The contrast between the slums in Dhaka (the capital of Bangladesh) where the people who work in the garment factories live and Swallows (the Fair Trade community supported by People Tree) was all too apparent.

'I still find it hard to convey what Fair Trade means to those producing our fashion -- it's just so impressive to see how the women have used Fair Trade clothing to escape poverty and empower themselves and their children,' she added.

Although Emma wasn't involved directly in the design process of the youth collection, she did input on Fair Trade fabric choices: 'I wasn't centrally involved in the design of this collection, I had great fun in helping People Tree select some gorgeous Fair Trade textiles.'

Brilliant video, even better message. Just remains to be seen how far-reaching the Fair Trade message can go. A lot of people think there aren't the choices out there, but increasingly there are. It just depends on how much we really care.

It's really heartbreaking that those families are forced to live in horrible conditions like that. So, it's reassuring that people like Amin and Emma and People Tree are trying to change that. I will definitely be purchasing some more People Tree clothing if that will make a slight difference. I think the fact that they actually took the time to go to Bangladesh shows that Emma and People Tree really care about this issue, because a lot of celebrities and organizations advocate a certain issue, but they never really take the time to see the issue first hand.

On a lighter note, I love the new People Tree photo shoot. Emma's absolutely gorgeous and I love the clothes. I can't believe they're fair trade.
