Tommy Hilfiger launches Millennium Promise campaign to end African poverty
By Jess Wood on Tuesday 29 June 2010
Tommy Hilfiger is famous for his sportswear-inspired contribution to American fashion - and now he's adding global anti-poverty ambassador to his CV.
He's just launched a five-year campaign to support Millennium Promise, an international non-profit organisation that aims to halve extreme poverty by 2015.
His campaign includes a plan to build sustainable communities in sub-Saharan Africa and raise funds for the Millennium Villages project. To kick off the campaign, Hilfiger visited a Millennium Village community in Ruhira, in rural Uganda.
"No-one could fail to be deeply moved at the many serious challenges that villagers face every day in Ruhira but I've been incredibly inspired by the community spirit," he said. "Our ambition is to develop a hands-on campaign that is truly sustainable - five years for a lifetime."
As well as raising money through special Tommy products, company employees will be offered the opportunity to travel to Ruhira to physically help make a difference.
That's an incentive to apply for a job if ever we heard one...
