Victoria Beckham defends 'naturally thin' models
By Lucy Halfhead on Thursday 18 February 2010
Victoria Beckham has defended the right of fashion designers to use thin models, saying they should not be discriminated against because of their weight.
Beckham, who has just received positive reviews for her fashion collection, which premiered on Sunday during New York Fashion Week, said: 'Most of these girls are naturally thin.'
Speaking on American daytime show 'The View', she said: ‘And I don't think we should be discriminating against someone because they are too thin or too curvy or too large or whatever it is.'
Backing up her desire for a more inclusive fashion industry, she explained her commitment to the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). ‘The CFDA have reached out to designers, stylists and casting directors not to work with underage models, girls that are too thin and to be more ethnically aware,' said Beckham.
‘And I think designers are listening. I had a casting last week and had some terribly thin girls come in and it wouldn't have worked.'

defended by the most unnaturally thin of women.. No model is naturally 5'9 and size zero without some effort to be so. Size 8 and up is acceptable in my book.

There's a difference between naturally thin and model thin though. Yes there are a lot of girls in modelling who are naturally made up to be slim but it is not natural to see protruding bones and ribs. There are so many stories about models fainting on set due to malnurishment and things like that - that is NOT natural.

How can that woman even think of herself as a Designer, first she's a spice girl, then she's a WAG, then she's solO artist - I saw Holiday Airport when you came through the gates with Dane Bowers, Designer a spice girl does not make!

I agree with her. I'm not thin but I wince when magazines describe bigger/curvy women as "real" women. Naturally thin people do exist and shouldn't be discriminated against. However, women of all shapes and sizes should be educated about being too thin or too fat.

I think it's fair enough that Victoria has tried to present a balanced view. But as far as identifying major issues in the fashion industry goes, I do think more weight needs to be thrown behind solving the problem of models who are too thin. There can be very few cases of women who have been discriminated against for being too 'naturally' thin.

i don't get what the big deal is.. if models want to b a size 0 (which is actually an American size and is a british size 2 or 4) i have recently dropped 4 dress sizes and am now a size 6 but i didn't starve or harm myself in any way so i don't see how its a problem for 20-something models..

If a personis of legal age, can be of whatever size. End of story.

Thank you Victoria for trying to be fair enough both for the thin and not thin women. It is actually TRUE that some women are really naturally thin. As much as it's hard to lose weight, to some women, it's hard to gain weight! If some women don't want to be overweight, some women don't want to be underweight too! Both are unhealthy.
But if some models try too hard to be too thin, to become on top, well there must be really something wrong with that standard of "too thin".

I agree with this article. I'm naturally thin and eat alot aswell. so not all of us girls are bony but are slender. There are just people who have naturally fast mitabolisms as well as slow ones. People just get too crazy about image that they are willing to risk it all, even if it means to ridicule others who look differently.
