Alexander McQueen died on eve of mother's funeral
By Lucy Hutchings on Friday 12 February 2010
As the fashion world mourns the loss of one of its true greats, it has emerged that Alexander McQueen died on the eve of his beloved mother's funeral.
In an apparent suicide, McQueen was found hanged at his London home yesterday. He would have been due to attend his mother's funeral today, following her death on 2 February. His death is being treated by police as non- suspicious.
His design house confirmed the tragic news via a statement yesterday afternoon, which read: 'At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee's family.'
The designer was left devastated by the death of his mother, and had struggled to cope in the aftermath of her death.
His Twitter page offered an insight into his grief. On February 3rd, he posted: 'I'm letting my followers know my mother passed away yesterday if it she had not me nor would you RIP mumxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx...'
Days later on Sunday evening, he again took to the social networking site, writing: 'Sunday evening been a ****ing awful week but my friends have been great but now i have to some how pull myself together and finish with the HELLS ANGLES & PROLIFIC DEAMONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'
McQueen was due to show his latest collection at Paris Fashion Week later this month. A presentation of his McQ line in New York was yesterday cancelled.
Trish Halpin, Marie Claire's Editor-in-Chief, said: 'Alexander McQueen was an incredibly creative force in fashion and an inspiration to a generation of designers throughout the world. In work and in person, he was a one-off, a maverick, a visionary - his death is a tragic loss.'

What a sad loss of a good man and life.
One can understand how he found it hard to cope with the loss of his mother.
you only ever have one mother.
our prayers are with them both.

I was devestated to hear the news that Lee had died. I had the privilege of knowing Lee and I will never forget the kindness he showed towards me. My thoughts are with his family at this very sad time. Sleep in peace Lee. All my love Janet. xxx
