Cheryl Cole has been pulling out all the sartorial stops for her latest string of X Factor outings, and so it shouldn't come as a surprise that she tapped an Oscar winning look for Saturday's show.

For her stint in the judge's seat, Mrs C slipped into an Atelier Versace asymmetric white dress, but she wasn't the first to snap up the Grecian goddess gown.

Penelope Cruz gave the design its red carpet debut at Hollywood's biggest night of the year - the Academy Awards.

As the night's best actress winner, all eyes were on the Spanish beauty, who slipped into the floor-skimming number to hit the Vanity Fair after party, switching from the voluminous Balmain gown she wore to collect her award.

And though the dress might be the same, the starlets gave the look their own signature spin.

For Oscars' lady of the hour, this meant teaming the show-stopping gown with a neat chignon, and classic diamond stud earrings. Simple, but oh-so-chic.

Meanwhile, the Girls Aloud made it all about the hair, piling her tumbling locks atop her head, and wearing them fixed beneath a glittering headpiece. A single face-framing curl was left loose to one side.

I have to say that it looks if both were wrapped in a freshly dry cleaned sheet rather than wearing a dress....

Although Penelope gives this bed linen at least a touch of glamour.

Penelope of course, she is so gorgeous and elegant, she looks effortlessly glamourous here, Cheryl looks a bit too try hard with the hair piece, it makes it overdone in my opinion...

It looks like a duvet and not flattering .too much swathing...both ladies look best in other gear..agree with the sheet letter.. what a shame. Not very elegant if meant to look Grecian....
Seems too much material uptop..C Cole has a more 30s headwear with it and P Cruz was more the part.

Penelope by a mile, she is a natural beauty,unlike Cheryl who is all extensions etc. Penelope also has a body like a real woman not a stick insect.Penelope looks classy.

Penelope Cruz definitely. The dress fits her better and I think she is oh so chic so carries this style better. Cheryl is a little fake for me with all that hair and the dress doesn't need a fancy hair piece. As for it looking like bed linen, I'd like bed linen this classy!

Penelope's classic but simple up-do makes her look like a Greek Goddess in this dress, she doesn't need much makeup to shine and the small earrings set off the dress rather than overpower it.

Clothing, no matter how beautiful or expensive it may be cannot compensate for a distinct lack of class. This is why in my opinion one of the women pictured never looks anything other than a rough, foul mouthed chav. I wonder how "beautiful" she looked the night she violently assaulted someone. I remember seeing her attending the court appearance when she was criminally charged and she looked rough as hell. No dress and the £s spent on her high maintenance appearance could ever make this woman a lady. Penelope Cruz utterly shines in this dress, totally outclasses the other female being being compared to her who does not even merit being mentioned in the same sentence. Definitely Penelope Cruz, beautiful and classy.
