It seems we'll all be after stockings of a very different kind come Christmas Day...

With celebs such as Katy Perry and Rihanna having been spotted out and about donning the rather risqué underwear, it was only a matter of time before we all wanted in.

Whether it's down to the re-emergence of 40s and 50s trends on the catwalk, or the fact that staying in is the new going out during these times of economic gloom (where couples are spending more time spicing up their sex life) - sales of the saucy lingerie have soared in the past month.

On figleaves.com alone, sales of stockings and hold-ups have risen by 35% while suspender belts are up 40%.

'Women are desiring a more sexy, feminine look,' says the site's lingerie buyer Denise Fraser. 'Perhaps to improve their mood during harder times, or perhaps to pay homage to the glitz and glamour of the Hollywood of old.'

Practical for this decidedly chillier time of year, but far less of a mood killer than having to wrestle with thick woolly tights, we must say, this is one trend that we're quite tempted to try out ourselves.

But if you suffer from the common stockings-falling-round-ankles phobia, then you might like to take a leaf out of Lily Allen's book. She's been showing off her clever Chanel tights, which have been created to look like stockings. We've got our fingers crossed for a more affordable high street version to hit the shelves soon!
