Style gets weird and wonderful at Ladies Day

By Lucy Hutchings  on Friday 19 June 2009

Ladie Day at Royal Ascot

Enormous Quality Street sweets, a raven perched on a twig, a giant 99 ice cream and a hat made entirely of marshmallows were among the more bizarre creations to adorn women's heads yesterday at Ascot Ladies Day.

The weird and wonderful creations were the focus of the day, with the bigger the better clearly the key criteria for many racegoers.

One took the chance to make a political statement, wearing a headpiece emblazoned with a giant receipt reading, 'I paid for this hat on expenses,' while another daring attendee sported an outlandish hair headpice, constructed of multiple hair-raising woven plaits and bows.

Even the day's more recognisable faces were keen to get in on the action. Model Jasmine Guiness arrived with two giant feather flowers perching on her head, like sci-fi Mickey Mouse ears, while Princess Eugenie's pea-like lime green creation was a far cry from traditional royal attire.

When slightly more conservative, giant corsages and sprays of feathers constituted many attendee's fascinators and headpieces.
