Elizabeth Banks was the belle of the ball at the first night of the Cannes Film Festival, as she lit up the red carpet in a stunning scarlet gown.

Just a day after being announced as the new face of L’Oréal Paris, the Hollywood beauty arrived for the premiere of Up in a scene-stealing asymmetric Armani Privé S/S '09 gown.

But it wasn't just her gown that caught our eye. Perhaps in preparation for uttering the immortal beauty mantra, 'Because You’re Worth It,' the actress showed off picture-perfect, flawless make-up, and gave a nod to old school Hollywood glamour with her soft marcel wave curls.

Banks was one of the first A-listers to step out at the French film fest, and was joined by Tilda Swinton, in maroon Haider Ackermann autumn '09, and Cannes judge Robin Penn Wright, radiant in a metallic Elie Saab autumn '07 Couture gown.

A stylish start, but the glittering event is set to get even better, with news that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will walk the red carpet together, in a bid to silence those persistant split rumours.
