M&S to sell two million items for a penny
By Lucy Hutchings on Thursday 14 May 2009
Marks & Spencer is celebrating its 125-year anniversary, by turning back the clock, and its prices too.
As a birthday present to its customers, the high street giant is looking back to its penny bazaar roots, and for three days only will sell two million items for just 1p each.
Three hundred M&S stores will take part in the celebrations, each selling 20 products for the miniscule price point, which includes everything from jewellery to knickers, cufflinks, luggage tags, tea towels, ties and socks.
A polka dot scarf, usually £12 is included in the mix, as is a teardrop earring and necklace set, normally priced at £9.50.
Shoppers will only be allowed five items each, and in anticipation of a flurry of eager bargain hunters, M&S has announced that extra security staff will be drafted in to man the stalls.
Sir Stuart Rose, M&S's chairman commented, ''It's been a tough year for us all but people are fed up with being fed up and we wanted to give our customers a real treat.'
He added: 'M&S started off in life as a penny bazaar back in 1884, so what better way to share our birthday with our customers than offering them the chance to choose M&S products for just one penny?'
Not only a treat for customers, the scheme is charitable too, with all the money raised from the bazaars going to M&S's 125 Charity Challenge, an initiative hoping to raise £1.25million for local and regional charities.
The event starts on Wednesday 20 May, with an official launch at its Marble Arch flagship, where Twiggy will be on hand to kick off proceedings.
