Last time Katie Holmes rocked the red carpet, she stepped out with tumbling hair extensions a colour-pop minidress and beau Tom Cruise at her side, so we couldn't have been more surprised by her latest glitzy outing.

Showing off a distinctly sleeker look at the Independent Feature Project 30th Anniversary Celebration in New York, Ms Holmes ditched the extensions, and was back to her signature chic side-swept bob.

Wearing head-to-toe black, the sleekness extended to her style, with an Alexander McQueen silk halter top and matching wide-leg trousers.

To complete her elegant ensemble, she added a pair of gladiator Givenchy heels.

And though her outfit drew admiring glances, it was her flawless make-up that's really grabbed our attention on the marieclaire.co.uk desk.

With her skin effortlessly radiant, she worked the perfect soft smoky eye, radiant peachy blush and a luscious dusky pink pout.

Looks like she should leave Tom at home more often - who needs a man when you have towering heels and scene-stealing glamour?

She looks great as usual but look in her eyes; bet Tom had some disparaging comment about the previous look and her hair extensions. The girl's got balls but we all suspect it must be difficult for her to be herself these days...
