How to get into ...

£9 shoes are Primark sell-out

By Lucy Hutchings  on Tuesday 14 April 2009

Primark Shoes - News - Marie Claire

A pair of hot pink heels that cost a credit-crunch-busting £9, has become the biggest selling item in Primark's history, and are now selling for over double the price on eBay, as buyers scramble to get their hands on the coveted footwear.

A sellout success, the candy pink courts became the bargain high street store's biggest ever seller, and are now cropping up on eBay for over double the price, going for up to £22.

Women have been reportedly snapping up multiple pairs of the shoes, inspired by candy-footed celebrities, such as Lady GaGa and Victoria Beckham, who have both been spotted in similar, albeit designer priced, designs.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Helen Penney of Primark called the design, 'a very classic court and a nice quality.'

Following the shoes' huge success, the style is now due to hit stores in a rainbow array of additional shades next month. Look out for aqua blue, coral and white - they won't hang around for long!

Seriously?? I think they're horrible.
Comment by sandra on April 14 13:00

Are they plastic. They look horrible
Comment by shablu on April 14 13:11

Quality and £9, not two words that exactly go together. How can any company can source and cut fabric, make up the goods, label them, ship them and then pay rates for shops, pay all the manufacturing, shipping ans sales staff and still make a profit from £9 ?. There is something VERY wrong with anything sold at this price.

I also think they'd rip your feet to bits, but since I never ever set foot (no pun intended) in Primark I would never buy them.

I think this chain must be doing something hideously immoral to be able to sell things at that sort of price.
Comment by Catherine on April 14 13:22

The are nothing special at all, well said Sandra,
Comment by Tabbie on April 14 13:26

I totally agree they are vile!
Comment by Krissy on April 14 13:44

They are nasty shoes!
Comment by Emma on April 14 13:55

Well said Catherine - despite their claims to the contrary I believe someone is being seriously overworked and dreadfully underpaid if Primark can afford to sell their (hideous) shoes, clothes and homewares at these sorts of prices and still make a profit!
Comment by Linda on April 14 14:04

yuck, yuck, yuck....

This must be a joke seriously!

They are plastic
Comment by sarah on April 14 14:32

They are really cute and add a funky edge to the little black dress. I have a similar pair myself although I paid a lot more for them! Primark make fashion accessible to the masses and I don't think that can be a bad thing.
Comment by Sarah on April 14 14:33

I saw these, werent all that great so dont understand why theyre sold on eBay lol
Have you guys not seen the news?
All this stuff about cheap (incl. children) labour in poorer countries & apparently they even got immigrants over to work in factories here! Also it's all cheap material so theyre saving costs but its quite bad for the environment as it manmade materials cant be recycled
I did a report on it for uni, can you tell ;]
Comment by Michelle on April 14 14:39

My best friend recently got caught up in the "pink frenzy" only to arrive home, look at the shoes and think 'what was all that about, they're really hard and uncomfortable'. Daresay ther'll be a lot of blisters this bank holiday...
Comment by Roisin on April 14 14:44

Completely agree - I won't be rushing out to buy them!!!!!
Comment by suzie on April 14 14:44

I wonder how much the workers got paid for making these?

The trend for throw-away fashion is truly terrifying. How many of these tacky plastic shoes will still be in wardrobes in a year's time? Even more worrying - how many of the chemicals they are made from will be leaking from our landfills into our water supply and food chain.
Comment by Mel on April 14 14:51

Not everyone has the money for designer shoes.
This is cheap and cheerful nothing wrong in that.
Comment by Patricia on April 14 15:17

OMG How funny are the comments saying this shoe is horrible!!...Its a pink shoe for £9 and it is a nice shoe..I think the people commenting are a bit old to realise that there is nothing wrong with a good pink shoe!!!LOL
Comment by Nicky - Lud on April 14 15:20

They charge such low prices because they make a huge quantity and peole buy them in droves, as with this shoe here. We're all just used to the way other shops put such a huge markup on their prices. Their ethics regarding production are no different from the majority of the high street (many of whom use the same factories that Primark do). I'd like to be an ethical shopper but I can't afford to, so I'll settle for cheap and cheerful!

That said, I have to agree the shoes are quite hideous so I personally won't be buying them!!
Comment by Lindsay on April 14 15:23

I need say only one word - CHAV!
Comment by Carol on April 14 15:25

I would rather take a cheese grater to my shins than wear a pair of these shoes.
Comment by Lorraine on April 14 15:29

what is wrong with people, everyone is going to be walking around in the same ugly £9 pair of shoes just because a celebrity wore them. very very sad. they are hideous!!!
Comment by tom on April 14 16:03

Admittedly I do not like the shoes, the eighties were hideous and a time fashion should forget, but do you not think that most retailers are probably doing something immoral in there selling of goods, ripping off producers etc. At least primark are not charging ridiculous sums of money for their goods.Anyway some people are seriously on their moral high horse, hope they are shopping organic, local, fairtrade etc and have a budget which allows them to do so. Would love to but I dont.
Comment by shenene on April 14 16:10

Old people like me can appreciate pink shoes too, but these are too plastic-ky and too high!

You think £9 is cheap? In the Far East, there are $10 shops which equates to about 80p! Yes, there is child labour going on. However, some high-street shops use it and charge £45 with profits going to their own pockets...

I recycle almost everything, be it to charity or the local council recycling services or adapting my clothes
Comment by Ruby on April 14 16:36

Reading the comments re the shoes has given me the best laugh all week. The shoes are hideous and they would never darken my door.... but each to there own. If you like them buy them !!!
Comment by Cheryl on April 14 16:51

U must be joking...plastic shoes...horrible....
Comment by Naomi Cleary Graham on April 14 17:10

well done.
All people who can not believe in the cheap price. They are living in their own world, too much fooled by adverts and commercials. I am not surprised if those £300 they always buy only costs £30 to produce. Wake up! Those companies always overpriced everything in the name of profit. And sure they do well, I say.
Comment by v_aleri on April 14 17:27

Actually, I was just thinking about what Shablu said - they do look plastic and they are probably some sort of thin pink plastic cover on the surface - so they will probably last approximatley 2 wears before they are scuffed and look nasty - well nastier!
Comment by Emma on April 14 17:36

These remind me of shoes sold in the eighties in all sorts of bright colours. They were rubbish then and they still look rubbish now!!!!!
Comment by Karen Arnold on April 14 17:40

I kow this is going to be hypocritical as i do shop in primark (only for the basics) but this shoes are horrible!! as much as i love pink i would not wear these and the colour is grose! why people would want to be seen in the same pair of shoes as evryone else is beyond me.

they are plastic so they can hardly be good quality !!
Comment by Paige on April 14 17:49

They are cheap trash I wouldn`t be seen in them! Maybe another colour would look better?
Comment by Lizzie on April 14 18:28

They are seriously hideous!!!
Comment by Allie on April 14 21:35

@ Catherine
Hello,
yes it's absolutely possible for 9 Pounds. Most likely there is no leather for upper and lining being used, only synthetics. In this case you can buy this basic stuff for USD 5-6 out of Vietnam or China, incl. shipping costs. Shocking? Maybe, but that's how it is
Comment by Andre on April 15 05:34

Well it must be nice to be as well off as Catherine and not to have to shop in primark some of us aren't so lucky!! Also no-one is telling you to buy the shoes I think free will still exists
Comment by Issy on April 15 16:50

OMG are you guys actually being serious??? I think they are nice and just because it's Primark. If it was something like New Look you wouldn't be complaining, yet you all complain about the credit crunch?? Geez get over it and grow up. Btw the plastic look maybe the whole point of the shoes...
So yeah I disagree with most of you stop slamming Primark!! I bet most of actually shop there so stick your noses down and come back down to Earth!!
Comment by Kim on April 15 18:30

I think there are some people out there that are making outrageous assumptions about the sourcing of these shoes. Each to their own and if they are in your taste and budget fair play to you. If you don't like them then don't spread rumours unless you have done research yourself to establish that they have been made imorally. Shame on you. Don't be such snobs and so judgemental about something that you probably have done NO RESEARCH on. Their not my cup of tea but the blue pair might be!! Bring em on!!
Comment by Deaon on April 15 19:45

FRUMPY! The color is the only interesting part of this shoe, and mildly at that. The heel isn't high enough to look chic. I can't understand why this would be such a hit - clearly some odd herd mentality that snowballed. (Whether cheap plastic or good leather, the basic design just looks boring and not at all risque'.)
Comment by Lisa in California on April 17 06:27

I think the negative commentators here are missing the point - they're as quality as you can get for £9! Primark aren't claiming they're going to be comfortable and last forever. As a shoe lover, I'll be getting these in every colour - not really because I'll wear them, but because I love shoes, I want shoes, and you really can't argue with £9! As for how Primark offer items at such low prices...well, thats a different story, but the fact is they wouldn't be able to operate against ethical law, so it can't all be that bad...
Comment by Lorraine on April 28 11:58

They're not bad but i wouldn't pay more than £9 for them.
Comment by Naomi on July 01 11:27

Wouldn't buy them. I tried them on in store, and they felt awful. As soon as my feet went into them they felt very uncomfotable. Rock hard. Please nobody buy them.
Comment by Hannah on July 06 23:23

Of course they can make a profit at £9 its just we are so used to paying astronomical amounts of money for goods that cost almost nothing to produce, and whos quality isnt that good, we are just brain washed into buying 'designer' why do you think the big names are making millons! wake up! and dont be so snobby.
Comment by annita hamnett on July 13 08:05

Ok so they aren't the best pair of shoes & I personally wouldn't buy them but not every1 can afford to wear nice designer stuff!!!

People are only buying them because of the celebs have been wearing pink shoes.

Who cares wear what you want don't follow the trends be an individual!

Comment by KAYLA on July 17 11:13

I saw them scattered all over the floor, I thought they were horrible. Neon is tacky.
