Michelle Obama has cemented her status as politics' most exciting style star, by gracing the cover of American Vogue.

The new first lady is just the second in US history to star on the cover – Hillary Clinton pipped her to the post as first – which hits newsstands this month.

Photographed by legendary snapper-to-the-stars, Annie Leibovitz, Obama wears a Jason Wu magenta sleeveless dress on the coveted cover spot.

The second stratospheric career boost that the previously little-known Wu has received from Mrs Obama, she also wore his asymmetric white dress for the inaugural ball, turning the designer into a household name overnight.

It's not just to Wu that she shows an allegiance to in the shoot though. In another shot, which shows her working at a desk, she wears a dress by Narciso Rodriguez, the designer that created her election night dress.

Speaking on her much-discussed style, Obama admitted to the magazine that she feels under scrutiny, 'I'm not going to pretend that I don't care about it. But I also have to be very practical. In the end, someone will always not like what you wear - people just have different tastes.'

As for the shoot itself, which Obama styled herself, interviewer Andre Leon Talley commented, 'She doesn't need any help (choosing outfits). She loves fashion and knows what works for her.'

Commenting on the shoot, Anna Wintour said, 'It's inspiring to see our first lady so serene and secure in her personal style.'
