Academy Award nominee luncheon

We could be in for a colourful red carpet at the Oscars this month, if yesterday's nominee luncheon is anything to go by.

Bringing together the chosen few who will battle it out for the industry's most coveted trophy, the luncheon gave nominees a chance to experiment with more casual style - think understated elegance - putting those billowing ballgowns on hold for the big night.

Giving a slight indication, though, as to what we can expect later this month on Hollywood's most influential red carpet, the stars were embracing colour, with red carpet favourite, black, largely ignored.

Amy Adams was resplendent in an aqua-blue Grecian halterneck, while her fellow Best Supporting Actress nominee Viola Davis shone in a ruby-red David Meister shift.

Pretty in pink, Taraji P. Henson, star of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, looked oh-so-chic in a blush pencil skirt and coordinating structural top, which she teamed with a pair of matching Louboutin courts.

With black banished, stars instead embraced winter whites: Anne Hathaway was fun and flirty in a bejewelled minidress; Penelope Cruz effortlessly elegant in a tux; and Marisa Tomei stylish in a monochromatic shift.

The only star to fall back on the style safety of the LBD was our very own Kate Winslet. Still undeniably stunning with flawless make-up and glossy locks, she unfortunately faded slightly amongst her literally brighter nominees. We'll expect more come the big night, Kate.
