First look: Madonna for Louis Vuitton
It's already one of the most talked about campaigns of the season, and now the pics are finally in, confirming that Madonna really is the new face of luxury label Louis Vuitton.
Shot by Steven Meisel, a long-term collaborator of Madonna's, the six-image campaign takes a Parisian theme, as inspired by Vuitton's spring/summer '09 collection.
Posing in a French bistro, the queen of pop exhibits her extreme flexibility, with her leg extended at a ninety-degree angle as she perches on a wooden chair. On her arm is the ubiquitous Vuitton statement bag; a sloucy satchel adorned with coloured charms.
Speaking for the first time on the campaign to fashion daily WWD, Marc Jacobs, Vuitton's creative director, revealed that inspiration struck him after seeing the material girl in concert.
'I was totally just blown away by it, and moved by her performance, by what she had to say, and her energy,' he said of the singer's Sticky & Sweet tour.
So when it came to looking for a new face for the label, he explained, 'I just blurted out, "I think we should do Madonna."'
As for the shoot itself, that took place at LA's Café Figaro, Jacobs admitted he was astounded by the singer, commenting, 'She's so sure of herself as an icon and as a woman... What fascinates me the most about her is her never-ending energy, and the idea of becoming and changing. She’s an artist who’s unafraid to use her voice.'
And as for those rumours that she demanded a hefty £10 million for her services, Antoine Arnault, Vuitton's director of communications, assured, 'It's very far away from that.'
