It was all about eye-catching fashion at last night's MTV Europe Music Video awards, and no one took the look more literally than the night's host, Katy Perry.

The I Kissed a Girl singer arrived for her hosting duties in a royal blue Jean Charles de Castelbajac gown, which featured eye motifs over the chest, complete with fluttering eyelashes. She teamed her frock with bright lemon yellow courts and a cute cupcake shaped bag.

Ensuring all eyes remained on her for the course of the evening, Perry then proceeded to wear an array of quirky designs throughout the show. These included a Manish Arora multi-coloured dress with carousel skirt, an outfit that was half white frilly dress and half tuxedo, a spangly T-shirt embellished with the face of new US president Barack Obama, a fuchsia pink playsuit and an American football uniform, complete with enlarged jersey.

But it wasn't just Perry that took a fashion risk. Beyonce Knowles, not one to typically stray from her safe red-carpet style, chose two dresses by avant-garde British designer Gareth Pugh for the evening.

First up, she arrived in a fitted black gown from Pugh's spring/summer '09 collection, which showed off those famous curves. Then to take to the stage and sing new single, If I Were a Boy, she wore a structured grey number, with exaggerated shoulders, that looked almost space-age in its style.

Knowles wasn't the only one to be supporting British design talent. Sugababe Amelle Berrabah chose a striking blue Preen bandage dress. The band took America as the theme for their collective look, arriving in red, white and blue, to prove the perfect compliment to the evening's high-dose of US patriotism.

On the more traditional side, floor-length gowns were also a favourite, with Pink donning a strapless metallic affair, and Anastacia wowing in backless sequin number.

The Brit pack were out in force for the awards, including Daisy Lowe, who embraced this season's gothic trend, and wore a black leather mini dress, which she teamed with a studded leather belt and patent platform courts.

Leona Lewis was another Brit to prove her style credentials, and looked pretty-as-a-picture in a sugar pink prom dress.
