Michelle Obama style sparks debate

Marie Claire News: Barack Obama

Michelle Obama's bold choice of election night dress has divided opinions Stateside, sparking instant and widespread debate on the first lady-elect's style.

Taking to the stage at Grant Park in Chicago, Mrs Obama wore a Narciso Rodriguez shift dress, which featured a splash of speckled red panels. She teamed it with a classic black cardigan, which served to emphasise the bold red print.

A more daring version appeared on Rodriguez's spring/summer '09 catwalk, which was sleeveless and with a plunging scoop neck, but even though Obama's version was pared down, it still divided opinions amongst the public and fashion commentators alike.

On the negative side, a poll by People.com returned results that 65% of Americans hated the look, while The New York Times reported that many viewed the dress as a lapse of taste.

Wendy Donahue of the The Chicago Tribune, called the style 'intriguing to distracting' and added, 'Viewed from various TV camera angles, its seams always looked slightly askew and confused.'

Kinder assessments came courtesy of the fashion world though, and Mrs Obama's choice has already garnered comparisons with stylish first ladies Jacqueline Kennedy and Carla Bruni.

Speaking to the New York Times, Julie Gilhart, the fashion director of Barneys New York praised the style, commenting, 'That dress was unpretentious, it said,'Be who you are — don’t let someone else tell you how to be.'

Designer Elie Tahari was another fan, commenting to WWD, 'She will ignite the

fashion industry. She is young, pretty, smart and well put together.

These are a lot of great qualities.'

As for thoughts here on the marieclaire.co.uk desk, we applaud the new first lady's daring fashion taste, and look forward to seeing what stylish looks she has in store for the next four years.

I TOO, WATCHED AS OUR NEW PRESIDENT AND HIS FAMILY TOOK THE STAGE IN GRANT PARK. MICHELLE OBAMA'S DRESS IS THE LAST THING I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT ON THIS MOMENTIOUS OCCASSION. UNTIL I READ ABOUT THE COMMENTS ON THE DRESS I COULD'NT HAVE EVEN TOLD YOU WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE. IF THE ONLY THING THE MEDIA IS CONCERNED ABOUT IS HOW THE FIRST LADY DRESSES, THIS COUNTRY IS IN WORSE SHAPE THAN I THOUGHT.
LET OUR NEW PRESIDENT DO HIS JOB AND LEAVE HIS WIFE ALONE TO RAISE HER CHILDREN.
IT HAS NOT EVEN BEEN 24 HOURS SINCE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT WAS ELECTED AND ALREADY PEOPLE ARE BEING CRITIAL AND JUDGEMENTAL.
IF WE WANT TO TURN THIS COUNTRY AROUND WE NEED TO BE SUPPORTIVE AND TREAT THE OBAMA'S LIKE WE WOULD WANT TO BE TREATED.

Don't mind them. Those who say she's not fashionable just because she didn't bare her vital parts need to cleanse their petty minds!
Comment by Esther on November 06 12:29

EVERYONE sure was concerned about Sarah Palin's wardrobe....
Comment by William H. Stoneman on November 06 13:00

It was her husband's night so should it really matter? It wasn't revealing or in poor taste. It's not the sort of thing I'd wear but it looked smart and not over the top. So why shouldn't she so a bit of flare and wear something she wants?
Comment by Karen on November 06 13:02

I think the dress is quite nice but very unflattering - the black band across the middle creates the illusion of a big belly!!
Comment by Lindsay on November 06 13:08

Mrs Obama's dress was just right for the night. I thought it was smart but did not try to distract attention from her husband - the key figure in all this. Her dress sense shows she is modest, supporting her husband and her children - not trying to be sexy with bare shoulders and plunging neckline like most celebrities. Mrs Obama is above all that. Like her husband, her values are the ones that really matter - care, compassion, honesty, intelligence, hard work, beauty of the soul - not superficial, skin-deep beauty.

All too often, women in the public eye are interchangable style-wise as they are all told to follow the same rules. Mrs Obama dressed well, and in accordance with her own preferences. She looked good, supported her husband and children and did well.

Leave her alone to develop her own preferences and don't turn her into another identikit political wife.
Comment by Janet Andreasen on November 06 13:42

I think she looks nice. She should be able to wear what she likes, and seems to have adopted a modest dress sense for public events. (I also thing the middle band looks like an 'x', which would kinda be appropriate for voting week!)
What does it matter what she wears anyway?
Comment by Pamela on November 06 14:13

I think Mrs O looks cool as (except maybe she should have ditched the cardi!)...Down with mumsy frumpdom a la Sarah Brown, Cherie, Hillary and as for that Palin character, she can now tootle back to Alaska. £70k on her election clothes? Didn't help her win, did it!
Comment by CJG on November 06 14:17

I see nothing wrong with the dress - but maybe I haven't seen it in, uhm, several camera angles to examine the seams.
I think the dress is fine, I like the colours and I think it suits Michelle well.
But maybe my opinion doesn't count since I'm not American, and I don't have a style column in a big magazine :)
Comment by Ginger on November 06 14:17

The dress was beautiful....Just like her and her husband's demeanor.
Comment by Jackie L Cunningham on November 06 14:28

How sad. That the press have to focus on something so negative and petty. She is not only an intelligent woman but a brave one to support her husband/his party, work full time in a high powered job and raise 2 children. I think a cardigan and a dress is the last of her worries.
Comment by Jules Mint on November 06 15:25

If we are all honest with ourselves, we don't always put our best foot forward, and we have NO RIGHT to point the finger; whether she is Future First Lady or Not. Let's work together healing our country, not bashing Michelle Obama's wardrobe. Haven't we had enough negativity?
Comment by qdpie on November 06 15:33

I think it is nice that the dress represents a personal taste. It seems modern, bold and down to earth, not dressed up to slick perfection in a manipulatively styled way. That actually tunes in with the open-minded attitude America is hungry for I think, so it's fine isn't it? Anyway I don't understand why fashion workers have to openly respond to it, Mrs Obama was not appearing on a celebrity show or something, she attended to support her winning democrat husband.
Comment by F. on November 06 15:51

Funny, I hadn't realised that the US election's primary attraction was fashion? Michelle isn't a designer or a model, she's the first lady to-be, surely there are more important things to take notice of?
Comment by Sally on November 06 16:37

Really people? Is this necessary? I'm so horridly disgusted with crap like this! Truth is WHO CARES what someone thinks of the dress. If she likes it, feels comfortable in it and her husband says she looks beautiful in it -- that is ALL that matters!
I sure hope you don't come snooping into my wardrobe. The only thing about mine is: I feel good, I think I look good and my husband says I look good. I take him shopping with me because if I try something on that doesn't look good, he will tell me!

LET THESE PEOPLE ALONE! How you dress is a personal choice and an outward expression of WHO you are! No wonder why people in this world are so shallow -- they have the media feeding them all this crap!
Comment by Me on November 06 21:18

I find it very sad that in this day and age we build people up and then we knock them down. Who really gives a damn what she wore? her husband has just become Americas FIRST black President is this not far more important and worth talking about?
Comment by Helen on November 06 21:28

Looking at all the different outfits she wears she is really comfortable in wearing different colours and styles. I think this dress looks great on her and I don't think it's bright. We're going to see her in all the fashion magazines each week I bet! She can pull off practically any colour and she also compliments what her husband wears each time!
Comment by Sabrina on November 06 22:40

Dress is great, Michelle looked beautiful, just because she doesn't dress like a 'usual' first lady (aka Cindy McCain) it doesn't mean she's unfashionable! LOVE THE OBAMAS.
Comment by magazine-addict on November 07 17:26

Old horse face did not make a wise choice for her dress. It detracts from her spouse and all one saw was her flashing across the screen. In addition the dress was... askew is a good word. No continuity. It had no class.
