Gucci launches Unicef collaboration
By Lucy Hutchings on Wednesday 5 November 2008
As one of the fashion industry's most stylish charity collaborations, Gucci has teamed up with Unicef for a fourth year running, to create the Tattoo Heart Collection.
This season, the fashion house has created a bespoke range of all white bags, embellished with an illustrated heart, which incorporates Gucci's signature symbols, the horse-bit and the web. The tattoo was chosen as a motif for symbolic relevance, serving as a reminder of the charity venture.
Gucci's creative director Frida Giannini explained the illustrative design, 'It's a permanent mark that you can wear with pride that stays with you. I think that represents very well what we are doing here.
Gucci first collaborated with Unicef back in 2005, and has created an annual collection ever since. To date, the brand has raised a massive $5 million for the charity.
This season, it has enlisted the help of the ever-glamorous Rihanna, who stars in the bag's dedicated ad campaign, wearing a white cutaway swimsuit and swinging from a hoop as she clutches her Tattoo heart satchel.
Speaking earlier this year, Giannini explained her choice of model to WWD, 'When we decided to dedicate a full ad campaign, more than just creating products, to really come out and show our commitment to UNICEF, I felt a musician and a beautiful woman was the perfect icon for this campaign.'
The bags will go on sale worldwide on 19 November, until 31 January 2009, with a generous 25% of all sales go directly to the charity.
