How to get into ...

Paris Fashion Week goes tribal

Marie Claire Fashion news: Dior S/S 2009

We haven't seen too many animal prints this season; animal skins, yes, animal prints less so. John Galliano, however, featured both in plentiful, albeit it subtle, supply at his 'Tribal Chic' Dior show this afternoon in Paris.

With not a single trouser in sight, the flirty, sexy collection was in the main crafted from two basic ensembles: the sheer, pleated silk day skirt, worn with a cropped and belted jacket or blouse, and an equally sheer long skirt paired with a sculpted, corseted bodice for eveningwear (the models' modesty preserved with silk boy shorts at every turn).

Both looks, along with the accompanying halterneck chiffon or knitted dresses and the odd pair of black, zip-up leggings, were a lesson in statement dressing.

The real statements, however, came courtesy of the fabulous strappy sandals, with their curvy, sculpture-like female form heels. As high as anything we saw in Milan (which, if you'll remember, were very, very high), these managed to be both unique and beautiful at the very same time.

Continuing his love affair with Africa, models at the show – including Jessica Stam, Lily Donaldson and Natasha Poly – all sported Nefertiti-inspired crimped updos, crimson lips and dramatic dark eyes.

After all, statement dressing requires statement make-up, too.
