Designers in Milan this week are borrowing from a vast library of references and inspirations. The result? No clear set trends for the coming season. Yes, we've seen quite a few similar shapes and some beautiful ideas, however, aesthetics as such are varying quite distinctively from label to label, catwalk to catwalk; and, instead of must-wear trends, there's a style, print and cut to suit everyone, no matter how you usually like to dress.

One universally popular idea, however, is the statement shoe. Of those, we've seen plenty and, in this arena at least, all designers are in agreement: flats, most certainly, are out and towering heels very much in.

The favoured shape of the statement shoe this season features a sharp stiletto heel and stacked platform toe, displayed to perfection at Burberry, Bally and Jil Sander, although wedges have also been popular, featuring at Moschino and D&G in fabulous patent brights and with amazing sculpted heels at Armani and Gianfranco Ferré.

Colour and print vary widely, from Jil Sander's fierce black animal skin versions to Bally's pretty floral ones, but one thing's for sure, they're all very, very high.

And nowhere have the heels been higher than at the Prada show last night. Crafted from dyed python skin and featuring in-built tiny sockettes, tied at the heel with ribbon, the heels were so high that at least one model stumbled as she made her way around the fish-embossed catwalk and another suffered a complete wipe-out.

Thankfully, by the time these works of art make their way into stores, expect to see a slightly less death-defying heel height on offer, albeit one that still requires you take taxis everywhere you wear them.

Maybe it's finally time to retire the ballet pump.
