Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Zac Posen at New York Fashion Week

The penultimate day of New York Fashion Week on Thursday saw some of America's most famous, and most loved, designers take to the catwalk.

First up was Vera Wang, who left her bridal background in the closet, and looked to the future with a sharp and modern collection inspired by the artist Niki de Saint Phalle.

Although tulle and taffeta did appear, they only served to highlight the more masculine textures that crafted the main body of the collection. Sheer layers, sporty lines and chunky accessories (glittering motorbike chains were used in place of necklaces and belts) set out to prove that Wang doesn't just design for girlie girls.

With time for a leisurely lunch, Calvin Klein came next, showcasing sculpted pieces of clothing that were crisp and cool in their intricate simplicity. While the palette was bleak, with only a few stunning blues to break up the mainstay of white and cream, tiny accents of crystal and pewter provided balance.

Tommy Hilfiger followed with a languid and sultry collection that moved away from his usual all-American aesthetic into something altogether more sanguine and sexy. The classic blazers and halterneck dresses were still there, but tunic tops and fabulous swimwear moved the collection on from previous seasons.

The big crowd pleaser of the day, however, was Zac Posen whose show-stopping red carpet gowns and gem-studded cocktail frocks brought cheers of approval from celebrity friends Claire Danes and the Williams sisters, not to mention the big-name editors who littered his front row.
