What a gem

Marie Claire fashion: New York Fashion Week, Zac Posen S/S 2009

If you buy but one piece of jewellery to adorn your spring/summer wardrobe next year, make it a fabulous necklace.

Statement jewellery has been a big hit on the catwalks in New York this week, from Marc by Marc Jacobs' neon skater-style beads to Oscar de la Renta's leather coral cut-outs and 3.1 Phillip Lim's stunning art deco pendants. And while Grecian silver and gold cuffs have been popular, along with flowery headbands (thank you Diane von Furstenberg) and Zac Posen's flamboyant antique-coin chandelier earrings, it is undoubtedly the necklace that reigns supreme as the accessory of choice.

Some of our favourites appeared during Nanette Lepore's show, where sculpted and lacquered flowers, designed by Gerard Yosca, adorned each models' neck.

Yesterday at Vera Wang, meanwhile, the aesthetic couldn't have been more different and instead of posies of roses, it looked like someone had taken a few motorcycle chains, dipped them in glitter and then looped them into necklaces and belts.

If a necklace is too much hassle, jewelled bibs have also been a surprisingly popular choice this week, adorning dresses at Lela Rose and Matthew Williamson, to name just two.

Finally, for the most fashion-forward alternative to the necklace, look to Philosophy where gem-studded breastplates were worn over sumptuous floaty dresses and gauzy Indian fabrics.

Three very different ways to wear it; one very big trend.
