Celine appoints Phoebe Philo

By Lucy Hutchings  on Friday 5 September 2008

Marie Claire Celebrity News: Phoebe Philo

Phoebe Philo is the new creative director of Celine.

After months of speculation, the appointment was confirmed yesterday, which will see Philo's return to the fashion scene following a two-year absence.

Speaking to WWD, Philo commented on her new role, 'In the current climate customers are looking for something that will get them interested and excited about buying again. I want to create clothes, shoes, bags and accessories that are relevant to right now — modern, exciting designs that women will desire and appreciate.'

Credited with turning around the fortunes of French fashion house Chloé, which she joined with college friend Stella McCartney, it was Philo who was lauded as the saviour of the brand, and for turning it into the much lusted after label that it quickly became.

She joined as the right-hand woman to her friend, a role she stayed in for four year until McCartney left in 2001 to create her own label. Taking the reigns of creative director, Philo's Chloé became one of feminine boho cool, which spawned a distinct signature look, much copied.

She left the label in 2006, to spend more time with her young family.

Her first collection for Celine will debut in March, for autumn/winter 2009.
