Topshop and M&S ethical fashion fight
Topshop and M&S are set to go head-to-head in a contest to be crowned the UK’s most animal-friendly fashion retailer.
The two high street giants are both on the fashion shortlist for The RSPCA's 2008 Good Business Awards, thanks to their innovative approach towards animal welfare, including how they source leather and other animal skin, and also how they sell, source and label fur.
However, don't forget the little guys. M&S and Topshop aren't the only names in the running; knitwear brand Izzy Lane (pictured here), Fairtrade fashion label Natural Collection and organic couture house Romp make up the shortlist of five.
'We were highly impressed by the calibre of entries this year,' says judge Wayne Hemingway. 'Our finalists demonstrate that with dedication and passion, it is possible for fashion retailers to establish profitable business models that position animal welfare at the core. It was truly inspiring to see that welfare friendly can equal fashionable and profitable.
'However, there is still much progress to be made across the industry as a whole, and we now want to urge more high street retailers to follow suit and establish sustainable welfare policies that are so vital to an ethical business agenda.'

Since when was 'sourcing leather and other animal skin' and 'selling, sourcing and labelling fur' animal-friendly?!

When we started a few years back everyone thought we were mad to link good animal husbandry and leather and show the source of our skins to our customers.
We take this nomination as a sure sign that infuture, amongst all the normal criteria for leather the new equation that poor quality animal husbandry equals poor quality leather equals poor quality sales figures and poor brand identity, will become simply an obvious and normal aspect of the trade.
Thanks to all who have shared their time, experience and knowledge with ROMP through the years.
And good luck to all nominee's. Let's make poor animal husbandry in fashion so 20th century and in our time unessacary, unwelcome, unprofitable and un stylish.
Always going to love a steak it just tastes better when the animal is raised well. Always going to love great design it just feels better when its made without cruelty or pollution

I hope Izzy Lane gets this award as Isobel Davies is the most dedicated person when it comes to her beliefs.

The real winners (whatever the result) will still be the Sheep that Izzy Lane looks after. saved in the first place, and then allowed to live until they want to die whilst in the meantime receiving the best vetinary care, whatever the cost. It's not just wool, it's Izzy Lane wool!
