FrostFrench pay out in race row

Marie Claire Celebrity News: Sadie Frost and Jemima French

FrostFrench, the fashion label started by Sadie Frost and Jemima French, has been forced to pay out £5,000 to an employee who claimed the company was racist.

Aba Yankah claimed that she was sacked from her job as a sales assistant at the label's temporary Burlington Arcade store after less than a day, when the manager discovered that she was black.

Ms Yankah had been hired via a recruitment company. On starting, she stated that the only thing that changed was the manager's attitude towards her, due to her race and colour.

The case was heard at the London employment tribunal, and although the company denied the allegations, the panel decided that although racial discrimination could not be proven, the label could also not offer an explanation for Ms Yankah's dismissal.

She was awarded £5,000 in compensation for loss of earnings and injury to feelings.

A spokesman for the label expressed in a statement, 'FrostFrench is a multicultural company with a strong commitment to racial equality… FrostFrench won't appeal the decision and cannot comment further due to legalities.'

'I must stress that Sadie and Jemima are deeply upset that the FrostFrench label has been drawn into something like this,' it added. 'Both are huge campaigners for racial equality.'
