This summer's must-watch TV
Grab some popcorn and find an excuse to stay in, because tonight sees the start of fashion's hottest new TV show, Britain's Missing Top Model.
Taking reality TV to a whole new level, the show is set to be must-see summer viewing, and features marie claire's very own editor, Marie O'Riordan on the judging panel.
Eight gorgeous girls will battle it out for the title, the only difference is, look closer and these are not simply beautiful girls. Each one has a disability, whether it be visible, such as a leg amputation, or invisible but just as challenging, such as deafness, or partial blindness.
Marie explains, 'This is a TV show that attempts to challenge society's perceptions of beauty. By cleverly employing the familiar format of a reality show, it invites the viewer to take a journey into the heart of prejudice around disability. Just like marie claire, this programme features the glamour of the fashion industry while courting provocative discussion.'
On the prize Marie adds, 'The winner will model in a fashion shoot photographed by award-winning photographer Rankin, to be published in the September issue of marie claire. This will guarantee the winner a great start in launching a successful career as a model. I was proud to partake in a show that will change one girl's life forever and hopefully touch the hearts of millions of viewers.'
Tune in to BBC3 at 9pm tonight for the first show, and get all the behind the scenes gossip right here on marieclaire.co.uk, where from tomorrow you can log on and vote for your favourite girl.

BEAUTY IS NO COMPETITION! Being disabled myself from birth (I'm now 43), it is about time disabled people were given more public visibility and a forum to be heard. I do however have plenty of reservations about the manner in which that is being done i.e. via a 'beauty' competition.
Whilst fashion and having appropriate clothing designed for disabled people is important setting up a divisive stage between women, in my opinion is not addressing the problems faced by the majority of disabled people including men. What is the aim? to challenge the traditional ideas of 'beauty' based on 'poise' and 'balance'? I haven't yet seen the full programme but in terms of representation across the spectrum of disability it does not appear to be balanced in itself. It appears men are excluded and shades of colour, and age also, as was previously the case until the likes of 'Supermodel' Naomi Campbell and the dove pro age ads. To fall into that trap again would be like air brushing out those so called 'imperfections' not deemed suitable, or are considered contary to the preconceived ideas held by the 'designer/s' of this show, ring any bells?. Disability transcends all 'nations' and previously held views on social division, so why Britain's 'top' model?. It seems more like a marketing exercise to me, which I doubt will make a positive impact on the vast majority of disabled people, what ever happened to the concept of equality? Which has been the call from disabled people globally for so many years. Please don't try to set us up in competition, to value our 'beauty' on the values held by others.
