SJP's fury over premiere dress

Marie Claire celebrity news: Sarah Jessica Parker at the NY Premiere of Sex and the City

Sarah Jessica Parker has spoken of her anger at discovering the Nina Ricci gown she wore for the New York SATC premiere had been worn before.

It looks unlikely that the actress will be wearing Nina Ricci again after she revealed that designer Olivier Theyskens had assured her during a fitting that she was the first to step out in the metallic silver frock.

Speaking to the New York Times, the Sex and the City star described how both she and her stylist asked Theyskens directly if anyone had worn and been photographed in the dress. To this he said no.

SJP wore the gown to the premiere, but then swiftly discovered that not only had it been worn before, but Theysken had accompanied socialite Lauren Santo Domingo to the MET's Costume Institute Gala in the very same gown. Lindsay Lohan had also been photographed in the dress earlier this year.

'He didn’t say, ‘Well, actually I just escorted Lauren down the red carpet at the Met.' Parker described of her conversation with the designer. 'I just wish it had been handled differently and they had been straight about it.'

She has since commented, 'My affection for the dress hasn't changed, but what they did was so short-sighted. It's just unethical and disappointing that they would allow the dress to be worn again.

Well, I reckon it's called "recycling", lol!

Unethical to wear a dress twice? Isn't it really inethnical not too! Stupid shallow girl.....

Unethical and disappointing that they would allow the dress to be worn more than once? What a fine sentiment. Perhaps some ecological charity would like to approach her and ask her to be their spokesperson since her sense of ethics is so finely honed.

How is it unethical to loan the same gown out more than once? Perhaps dishonest not to admit it had been worn before but at the end of the day it was a free loan of a designer dress. Good recycling I'd say!

Omg, seriously the only unethical thing is that she would say that. If you like the dress wear it, after all that’s what wearing clothes is about, liking them. Its so narrow minded that with every unethical issue in the world she can say wearing a dress that’s not original should not happen. I understand she’s a style icon (though why I have no idea) but people are stuck wearing rags as they cannot hope to afford such luxuries as new wardrobes. I think SJP needs to sort her priorities. Honestly, worse could happen, stop the drama you mug.

Get a grip woman! People die of AIDS everyday because they can't afford the drugs that can save them. That's unethical.

I totally agree, this it too superficial to even think of! Shallow doesn't describe it completely though, there should be a more precise word and it's got to entail materialistic, superficial, shallow, egotistical and supreme narcissism all in one. Way to go SJP, you went from describing women's lives through your art to a total bitch! Wow new low in the world of Hollywood.

I agree with all of the prior comments as that's exactly what I was thinking when I read this. For someone who's made their name from a show that puts such an emphasis on coveting expensive designer luxuries, it seems ludicrous she wouldn't expect a designer to want their garments to be worn as much as possible. Sorry to go against most people's opinion but I have always hated SATC for being shallow, vain and materialistic. I don't think it empowers women at all. I've always suspected too that SJP isn't as saccharine-sweet as she likes to portray. After all it's not that easy to rise to the top in Hollywood on niceties alone.

UNETHICAL?????? Seriously, get a grip!!! SJP you have gone so far down in my estimations it is untrue!! SHAME ON YOU!!!
Comment by Rach on June 05 09:38

It's funny how SJP says it's unethical to be given a design worn by others, but it's not unethical to wear fur on her show. Get a grip woman! I love SATC but it looks like SJP needs to have the bubble that she's living in burst and enter the real world where things like poverty and cruelty are what you base the word ‘unethical' on and not who's wearing what.

Of course it's easy to snipe at SJP as most of the comments on this page do. But please, she is not saying it's unethical to wear a dress twice. She is saying that she's hurt because she had a very special event to go to, she asked a very specific question and she was lied to. Theysken's lied to her. He lied to gain an advantage and he abused her trust. He took advantage of her celebrity for his and his label's own gain. Ok, it's a storm in a tea cup - worse things are happening in the world and at home - really violent abuses of trust are taking place right now as we speak. But this is a fashion story and in its context, she's right to feel disappointed and betrayed.
Of course the real question today about ethics in fashion are how £6 dresses and £5 jeans work their way into our high street shops. So let's stop being nasty about SJP and ask more questions about those little 'Made in India' labels. At least I guess that the vast majority of SJP's high end fashion is made in highly regulated workshops and European factories using only adult labour. And don't forget, SJP as Carrie was the queen of vintage! More than anyone she (along with Patricia Field) brought the concept of vintage fashion to the mass market and made it very, very chic. Goodness, Carrie even gets married in a no-label, second hand suit!
