60% brides keep their wedding dress

Bride in wedding dress

Sixty per cent of brides keep their wedding dress after the big day, a study by Cancer Research UK has revealed.

The survey discovered that just 7% of women donate their dresses to charity, with a further 7% customising their gowns to wear again.

The charity is now encouraging women to fish out their old gowns, and rather than let them collect dust in the back of a cupboard, sell them to raise funds for their new campaign.

The wedding donation campaign is calling on women to sell their wedding dresses through the 'eBay for charity' feature, on the auction website. A percentage of profits will then go directly to Cancer Research UK.

The campaign has been launched by TV actress Gaynor Faye, who has donated the wedding dress that she wore on ITV series Fat Friends. Look out for the £2,000 Maggie Sottero gown, as it will go onto the site on 24 May.

I completely agree with both Catherine & Christina.

My mom borrowed her wedding dress, so ultimately had to give it back and it's one thing she regrets. She wished she'd had the opportunity to keep it so I would have had the chance to wear it myself.

I have my dress stored in a beautiful box in my bedroom. Should I ever have a daughter I would like to give her the opportunity to wear it plus my niece has her eye on it too!

I'm all for charitable giving (and do personally donate many other items) but don't make us feel guilty for keeping hold of our dream dresses.

I totally agree with Catherine. If you have a happy marriage, it is great to keep the dress that was a very special part of the big day as a memory.

My mother has kept hers too and it was fantastic to see it when I was a child and imagine how she looked and felt on her day.

I can understand why people whose marraige hasn't worked might want tot donate their dresses, however I think it's a bit cheeky to suggest everyone should give away their dresses.

My dress is part of my special day, and it does lie in a box and I doubt I'll ever wear it again, but I wouldn't part with it for the world.

I give a lot to Cancer Research, all of my clothing to charity goes there, I donate books and give money, but I really object to being told how, what and when to give, it's a personal choice adn donors should not be dictated to
