Carla Bruni's chic royal style

Carla Bruni with the Queen

As President Sarkozy and his new wife Carla Bruni touched down in London yesterday, all eyes quickly turned to the former supermodel's style, and she did not disappoint.

Taking inspiration perhaps from Jackie O or even Audrey Hepburn, Mrs Sarkozy chose a chic grey ensemble from Dior to arrive in the country, which included a neat pillbox hat and full-skirted coat. Dior accessories complimented the look, including a narrow belt at the waist, black leather gloves and a hoop-handled handbag.

The look proved elegant, although some observers claimed the style too demure and a conservative departure for the new French First Lady.

Marie Claire's shopping editor Nicole Smallwood opposed these views, and described the look as 'fitting'.

'She does not want to overshadow him (her husband), she wants to be there to support him on this first occasion,' Nicole commented.

'It is quite a big deal, I imagine, to be coming here and meeting the Queen. I don't think you need to make a statement every time you put on an outfit. I think she looks sophisticated and she looks chic, which is much more important.'

For the evening, the couple attended a state banquet at Windsor, where the President's wife looked stunning in a midnight blue floor length gown, and chic chignon.

The Sarkozy's continue their two-day state visit today, which is the first trip by a French head of state in over a decade.

I think she looks stunning. Chic and elegant without looking dowdy. Reminiscent of Princess Grace. About time we had a first lady with a bit of style on the scene.

Sorry but i think Carla Bruni looks rather plain looking in this foto and really old-fashioned too.
Looks a little Jackie O to me but not what i would have chosen. Maybe the rest of the time she looks better. We all have off days.

Carla does look lovely and understated but she looks like my gran used to - it's like the 60's never happened

I think she looked fab exactly how she should look. She obviously made a big effort as it's not the type of outfit she normally wears.

She's meeting the Queen of England, who is about as traditional and formal as you can get. When you are in someone else's house, it's only polite that you do not dress in a manner than is offensive.
I think this is an appropriate outfit for greeting the Queen of England. Compare her outfit with the Queen's and you will see that they are of the same level of conservative and formal. You don't present to the Queen looking like a pole dancer!
I have heard that it's not uncommon, when arranging a formal, public meeting, that your people call their people and everyone finds out what everyone else plans on wearing so you don't clash or upstage. I bet you anything Carla's outfit was picked out after knowing what the Queen was going to wear.
I just wish she had a jaunty hat, but then, as I said, you don't upstage the Queen's hat.
